You Have The Power To Change Your Life

It’s funny how momentum works. The direction you’re moving in currently is the direction with least resistance. There’s pros and cons to the concept of momentum. If things are going really really great, it’s a lot easier to keep things going that way (provided you don’t become complacent). However, when things are not going so well, it can sometimes feel like you just keep digging yourself into a deeper and deeper hole.

If there’s one point I want to emphasise, it’s that no matter which direction your momentum is moving, at every single moment you have the ability to change it’s direction. You have power to change your life if you don’t like the way it is.

No matter which direction your momentum is moving, at every single moment you have the ability to change it’s direction.

When speaking of change we should always keep in mind progress and growth. Progress and growth are the cornerstones of change. Progress means to develop towards an improved or more advanced position, and growth means to undergo natural development by changing form.

Progress and growth are the cornerstones of change.

So when we think about both words and their relationship (let’s call it “progressive growth”) we define it as the natural development of personal attributes with the intention of breaking out of our own initial limits (breaking free from our initial form). In doing so we must give up a part of our current self for the potential that who can be is far greater [1].

A lot of fear can lie in the giving up of parts of the person we currently are (or used to be). This inability to let go of things that no longer serve us can potentially lead to the development of depression. We want something that we can no longer have or we want something to occur that we have no control over, whether that be a failed relationship, a job opportunity or validation from your peers.

To let go of the aforementioned ‘needs’ is to relieve the burden and stress that comes with denying our unconscious. “It is precisely because the unconscious in its wisdom knows that “the way things used to be” is no longer tenable or constructive”[1].

So, if we want to use momentum as a tool, we must be constantly changing – changing in the sense of improvement. Whether things are going poorly or brilliantly progress and growth are a necessity. Either to bring ourselves out of a negative momentum situation or to sustain the positive momentum we have already generated.

Just remember, you have the power to change your life if you don’t like the way it is.

Always,

Adam, 2019
