10 RULES FOR LIFE: A Guide to Self Improvement

I never intended that this would be an exhaustive summary because I believe that’s just not possible, ever. But these are some rules that I’ve started to live by based on my own experiences and I believe they are helping me to grow and improve myself so much, hence why I’ve become a writer. I always love to hear people’s input, comments, feedback and questions, so please leave it in the comments, I’ll do my best to reply to all. I hope this inspires.

RULE #1 – BELIEVE CREATIVELY

Legend has it that he who is crazy enough to believe that he can change the world, is usually the one that does. Belief is the cornerstone of all achievement, growth and progress. Think about it this way…the creativity we have in our beliefs is what separates us from the rest of the world. We have been given a unique gift to think freely, and it is this freedom of thought that is limitless. Read more…

RULE #2 – FOCUS YOUR ENERGY ONLY ON THINGS THAT MATTER

Screen Shot 2018-11-23 at 12.00.15 pm.png

As humans we have a limit on how many things we can focus our energy on and still manage to make them productive. This number might differ slightly from person to person, but this is not the point. The point is, because of this limit that exists in our natural make-up as humans we must be careful what we invest our energy into. We don’t want to fall into the trap of trying to be something that is not set on our values – we don’t want to waste our valuable stores of energy on things that truly don’t matter to us. RULE #3 – A PLANNED ROUTINE WILL BOOST YOUR CONFIDENCE

Screen Shot 2018-11-23 at 12.00.40 pm.png

Once time passes we can’t get it back. The minutes we have now will soon be the days of yesterday. We NEED to plan – we MUST be disciplined if we want to be true to ourselves. A planned routine will work wonders for your confidence. What if everything you desired could be achieved and all you had to do was write it on a page, or draw it in a book, or pin it to your fridge? I am telling you this because a lack of direction will often lead to a lack of meaning – we will not strive for our morals and values, and we will consequently feel powerless. Read more…

RULE #4 – KNOW MORE ABOUT YOUR OWN LIFE THAN YOU DO ABOUT THE LIVES OF OTHERS

Screen Shot 2018-11-23 at 12.01.04 pm.png

The truth is, if you are too focused on the lives of others and the things that they are doing you will never have enough time to achieve your ambitions and dreams. Period.

How many times have you scrolled through facebook, instagram, snapchat; only to find that you feel as if you don’t measure up. That somehow others are having beautiful experiences and are connecting socially with friends – and you constantly compare your life to theirs. Why is this? You ask. Am I not as good as others? Is there something I am missing in life? Why can’t I have what they have? These are all good questions. Read more…

RULE #5 – EXUDE POSITIVE ENERGY TO STRANGERS

Screen Shot 2018-11-23 at 12.01.45 pm.png

A stranger is someone who has never interacted with you or sensed your presence, equally it is someone who you have never interacted or communicated with yourself. There is something boundlessly special about that first interaction with a stranger. Something so innocent, free and uplifting. Whilst prejudice is a possibility, no judgement on your past character, or on your triumphs and mistakes exists. You are seen at face value and your ability to make an impression is maximised, whether that be positive or negative. Read more…

RULE #6 – GET THINGS DONE EVEN WHEN YOU ‘DON’T WANT TO’

Screen Shot 2018-11-23 at 12.02.31 pm.png

Often times we miss out on the most beautiful things in life because we only want to work at our goals when it is easy to. What we forget to realise is that the most progress toward our goals comes during times of struggle – comes when we courageously face situations we once thought impossible to overcome. It opens up our mind to possibility. Read more…

RULE #7 – IT’S BETTER TO BE READY FOR AN OPPORTUNITY AND NOT HAVE ONE THAN TO HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY AND NOT BE PREPARED

Screen Shot 2018-11-23 at 12.03.12 pm.png

Working towards something we cannot see or feel or hold is a definite challenge for us as humans. Our minds are wired to work towards certain goals we set for ourselves but we can often lose sight of these because the things that we are passionate about or enjoy doing don’t seem to fit in with the present construct of society. This can lead us to either give up on our true ambitions or to pursue a path that society coerces us into. Read more…

RULE #8 – YOU DON’T NEED A LOT TO BE GREAT

Screen Shot 2018-11-23 at 12.03.38 pm.png

We can make a lot from a little. Let that sink in…

It’s a thought that I live by and I hold onto it with every strength that I have because it drives me to realise that I can make something of myself and pursue my goals right now, with the things that I presently have. Most things that we think we need to have in order to be successful are not true. These are things like money, opportunities and experience. Money and experience is what we will be earned from consistent effort (even if not immediately) and we will create our own opportunities. Read more…

RULE #9 – WORK HARD AT WHAT YOU BELIEVE IS YOUR PASSION – THE WORLD WILL HANDLE THE REST

Screen Shot 2018-11-23 at 12.03.56 pm.png

Maybe there’s stuff you don’t want to do, but you know that it’s good for you in the long run. Like exercising or budgeting or reading or cleaning, some stuff just sucks, and I get it. We feel like the effort we put into these things may not yield immediate results, and that is true. But what we can be sure of is that any situation we face or any circumstance we find ourselves in that challenges us will ultimately result in some form of growth. Read more…

RULE #10 – THERE IS NO REASON NOT TO FOLLOW YOUR AMBITIONS, SO MAKE TIME FOR THE IMPORTANT THINGS

Screen Shot 2018-11-23 at 12.04.29 pm.png

Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple Inc. said in one of his most famous Harvard University addresses, “If you lived each day as if it was your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.” For the last 33 years of his life, Steve would look in the mirror each day and ask himself, “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I’m about to do today?” If the answer was “no” for too many days in a row, he claimed, he knew he needed to make a change. He said that, “Almost everything, all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment of failure, these things just fall away in the face of death – leaving only what is truly important.” Read more…

  1. Beautifully explained…everyone got to set rules and principles in life ….a bit of divergence here and there should be acceptable though….like at times a routine can be killing…so an unplanned break may just what you may require to get back on track..
