Burning Away Our Old-Self To Make Way For The New

My deepest fear is not that I’m incapable – my deepest fear is that I may never reach the potential of my capabilities. I’m afraid that I may let time pass by and make no real progress because I’m too lazy or holding on to some egotistical view of the world.

What I do know is that fear will not disappear, ever – it will always be a presence lurking over my shoulder. What I also know is that on the other side of fear is an unimaginable freedom. We just need to have the guts to push through the moments of unknown even when the light ahead cannot be seen. If fear always exists then so do opportunities for unimaginable freedom, right? So how do we get to this unimaginable freedom and what does it mean?

When the light ahead cannot be seen we need to CREATE the light that guides the way. Remember the story of Jesus who was the light of the world that would guide us closer to God? That’s what we need to emulate. The light from one candle can be the same light that illuminates a thousand candles. So why should that original light not be yours? When we create hope (light) and give it to others, it will light up the rest of the world – WE CAN SEE BETTER because the light from others also shines brightly.

People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within.

Elisabeth Kubler-Ross (1926-2004)

As humans we are like the ‘wick’ of a candle – the part that burns up. We all have the materials within us to burn away our fears and shine brightly like the stars – that’s where this freedom comes from. We can choose to shine as brightly as we like in this world whenever we want, but it comes with the drawback that we must ‘burn away’ or give up a part of our old self to make way for a new version of ourselves – this is where fear often lies.

Depression and anxiety and panic attacks can all be accredited to our fear of letting go. When we refuse to let go of the parts in our character or our attitude that no longer serve us, we can become stagnated – we struggle to make progress, then we question ourselves, ‘why?’.

It’s about cutting that chain that keeps you restricted. The only thing we should honestly fear is staying stagnated – doing nothing – being nothing. There is nothing to fear about letting our true light shine through – it’s what we were born to do.

The only thing we should honestly fear is staying stagnated – doing nothing – being nothing.

So please, don’t let any crappy situation or circumstance you may find yourself in stop you from being the light. They can lock you away, push you away and tell you that you’re worthless – but just promise me one thing….

Every time this happens, come back with a brighter light because if you have a vision, others will join along and you can inspire them too. You can’t do anything alone, but you can light another person’s candle and that will make all the difference. Light can shine in the most desperate and dark of places. Don’t be afraid to burn away all the thoughts of the past that constantly eat away at you. Be the light for yourself and for others.

You were born to shine!

Always,

Adam, 2019
